The Preface mentions the book ``Functional equations and modelling in science and engineering'' by \textit{Enrique Castillo} and \textit{Maria Reyes Ruiz-Cobo} (Marcel Dekker, New York (1992; Zbl 0801.39004)). Compared to that, the present book contains the new subsections: Some examples of functional equations; From difference to functional equations; From functional to difference equations, and the new section: Some methods for solving functional equations, while most of the section: Miscellaneous applications; of the previous book seems to be completely rewritten as Part II. ``Applications of functional equations'', with the sections: Functional networks, Applications to science and engineering; Applications to geometry and CAGD; Applications to economics; and Applications to probability and statistics.
