The authors investigate the squeeze Newtonian flow between closely spaced plates of arbitrary size and shape, and show that the general solution includes an in-plane potential flow whose components satisfy Cauchy-Riemann conditions. The velocity field and the pressure are both determined by boundary conditions at the edges of the plates. In contrast, the velocity field in the infinite-plate limit requires boundary conditions only at the surfaces of the plates. It has been also shown that the infinite-plate problem is singular, and makes sense only as a limit of squeeze flows in finite geometries, each of which has a well-defined coordinate origin. Thus the analysis demonstrates the existence of a preferred origin and the significance of conditions at outer edges.
