This paper concerns the problem of factorization in the Wiener algebra of a \(2\times 2\) matrix function of the form \[ G(\lambda)=\left( \begin{matrix} 1\\ a(\lambda)\end{matrix} \begin{matrix} \sigma (\lambda)a(\lambda)\\ 1\end{matrix} \right), \] where \(\sigma\) is a proper rational function whose poles do not coincide with zeros of a. For the case when \(\sigma =\rho^ 2\), \(\rho\) rational, necessary and sufficient conditions for G to admit a canonical factorization are derived, and, assuming that these conditions are fulfilled, explicit formulas for such a factorization are given. The proofs are based on an analysis of finite rank perturbations of the Wiener-Hopf operators with symbol \(1+\rho a\) or 1-\(\rho\) a.
