Let \(N\geq 2\) and \(2<p<2^*\), where \(2^*= \frac{2N}{N-2}\) for \(N\geq 3\). The authors consider the following semilinear elliptic equation \[ -\Delta u+u= |u|^{p-2}u \quad\text{in }\Omega, \quad u\in H_0^1(\Omega), \] where \(\Omega\) is a domain in \(\mathbb R^N\) (possibly unbounded) and \(H_0^1(\Omega)\) is the Sobolev space in \(\Omega\). Here the authors present several new results for Palais-Smale sequences. To this end they unify the Vitali convergence theorem and main many concepts in the variational methods. They prove that the (PS)-condition, the Vitali convergence theorem for \(H_0^1(\Omega)\), and the methods by Lions, Lien-Tzeng-Wang, Chabrowski, and del Pino-Felmer are equivalent.
