One of the approaches to quantise gravity is the canonical formulation, resulting in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. Since the full equations are in general not tractable, one often studies simple models obtained from quantising a limited set of variables. The present authors study the quantisation of a general Bianchi-type A model (describing a homogeneous, but anisotropic universe). They formulate the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in terms of three quantities -- the determinant of the three-metric and two scalar contractions of the metric and the structure coefficients. Since this is still a complicated equation, which cannot be solved analytically, the authors end with studying the possibility to reduce the number of degrees of freedom at the quantum level.
