The authors derive a frequency equation which determines the velocity of generalized Rayleigh waves, including initial stress, gravity field and magnetic field, in a homogeneous orthotropic elastic medium. The frequency equation obtained is in agreement with the corresponding result obtained by \textit{Datta} [Rev. Roum. Sci. Tech., Sér. Méc. Appl. 31, 369ff (1986)], when the initial stress and magnetic field are neglected. Moreover, when the magnetic field is neglected, the present result is in agreement with the result of \textit{A. M. Abd-Alla} [Appl. Math. Comput. 99, No. 1, 61--69 (1999; Zbl 0926.74050)]. Numerical solutions of the frequency equation are discussed and presented graphically. The results indicate that the effect of orthotropy is small and can be neglected, whereas the effects of initial stress, magnetic field and gravity field are pronounced.
