Approximation methods and wavelets have found many important applications in signal processing. This well-written textbook provides an elementary introduction to approximation theory. The authors are concentrated on the presentation of main ideas and demonstrate the great influence of the classical approximation theory on modern applied mathematics. This book with many illustrative examples is easy to read. It consists of 5 chapters. Chapter 1 presents basic approximation methods with polynomials. After an introduction to infinite series, Chapter 3 is devoted to Fourier series and Fourier transforms. Chapter 4 explains the fundamental questions of wavelet theory and discusses some applications in signal processing. Finally, Chapter 5 presents some mathematical properties of wavelets. This introductory textbook will be very useful for anyone interested in approximation theory and wavelets.
