The author gives a counterexample to theorem 0.4. in \textit{J.H. Silverman}'s paper [Duke Math. J. 60, 401-423 (1990; Zbl 0744.14014)], where it is claimed that the rank of the \(\mathbb{Z}\)-span inside the Jacobian of a modular curve of the images of a noncuspidal, non-CM point \(x\) on the curve under the Hecke correspondence \(T_p\) for large primes \(p\) equals \(p\) if \(x\in J_{\text{tors}}\) and \(p+1\) otherwise. Indeed, this theorem becomes correct if ``\(x\in J_{\text{tors}}\)'' is replaced by ``\(\tau_p x\in J_{\text{tors}}\)''. The counterexample is constructed for a Jacobian which is isogenous over \(\mathbb{Q}\) to the product of two elliptic curves. It also provides a counterexample to corollary 4.2 in [\textit{M. H. Baker}, Invent. Math. 140, 487--509 (2000; Zbl 0972.11057)] which relied on Silverman's statement. The paper concludes with an appendix where the finiteness of a set of CM points of bounded height on any modular curve is proved.
