This volume consists of seven independent didactic chapters by different authors describing computational models of various systems in the human body. The first three chapters concern three physiological models, vascular, cardiac, and tumoral. Chapter 1 addressees models for the numerical simulation of the human circulatory system, focusing on the analysis of hemodynamics in arteries. Applications include the prediction and possible prevention of stenoses. Chapter 2 describes computational methods for modeling and simulating cardiac electromechanical function. Applications include improved understanding of cardiac pathologies and quantitative modeling of their evolution. Chapter 3 examines the mathematical properties of a simple model of tumor growth. The next two chapters are dedicated to the simulation of deformations within the human body. Chapter 4 describes computatonal models for crash and impact simulation. It presents the latest generation of virtual human models used to study the consequences of car accidents on organs and other anatomical structures. These models allow the interactive design of safer vehicles. Chapter 5 describes computational models of soft tissue useful for surgery simulation. Real-time constraints lead to specific models which are applied to the simulation of minimally invasive surgery of the liver and other digestive organs. The last two chapters are devoted to computational models of image-guided intervention and diagnosis. Chapter 6 describes computational models of organs used to predict and track deformations of tissues from sparse information acquired through medical imaging. These models rely upon successful combinations of biomedical modeling and medical image analysis. There are applications to image-guided neurosurgery and image-based quantitative analysis of cardiac diseases. Chapter 7 presents a computational model of the breast used to predict deformations during interventions. The main applications are to image-guided clinical biopsies and therapy.
