Let \(A\) and \(B\) be two \(K\)-algebras for a field \(K\) and let \(M\) be an \(A\)-\(B\)-bimodule. Then, \(T=\left(\begin{smallmatrix} A&M\\ 0&B\end{smallmatrix}\right)\) is a \(K\)-algebra in a natural way. \textit{I. Palmer} and \textit{J.-E. Roos} [J. Algebra 27, 380-413 (1973; Zbl 0269.16019)] obtained for \(B\)-flat \(M\) an explicit formula for the global dimension of \(T\) using a Mayer-Vietoris-like long exact sequence. In the paper under review, the author presents a very short construction of this long exact sequence which holds under slightly less restrictive conditions. Namely \(M\) has to be either \(A\)-projective or \(B\)-flat. An application on incidence algebras for partial ordered sets is given, generalizing a result of \textit{M. A. Gatica} and \textit{M. J. Redondo} [Commun. Algebra 29, No. 5, 2269-2283 (2001; Zbl 1042.16004)].
