The emphasis of this book is on the \(H_2\)- and \(H_\infty\)-optimal control problem for linear sampled data control systems. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part indirect methods for controller design are presented. After a short overview of continuous \(H_2\)- and \(H_\infty\)-optimal control, discretization of continuous systems is studied. Basic concepts for time domain models and frequency domain models of sampled data systems are introduced. A state space approach to a discrete-time \(H_2\)-optimal control problem and an introduction to the theory of discrete-time \(H_\infty\)-optimal control is presented. Controller design based on discretized continuous time system models might result in intersample ripples. In chapter 8 (the last chapter of part I) therefore fast discretization of systems is investigated. In part II (the remaining five chapters of the book) the problem of intersample ripples is avoided by considering the sampled-data system in the continuous time domain. Operator theory is used for stability analysis and controller design. The methods presented in the book are illustrated by examples with references to suitable MATLAB functions. Each chapter is completed by exercises and useful remarks on the literature.
