The paper is devoted to the solution of the one-dimensional periodic pseudodifferential equation \(Au = f\) by the trigonometric Galerkin method. The operator \(A\) takes the form \[ \text{Au}(t) = \sum^q_{p = 0} \int^1_0 k_p (t-s) a_p (t,s) u(s) ds, \] where the coefficients \(a_p\) are \(C^\infty\) and 1-biperiodic, and the Fourier coefficients of \(k_p\) are assumed to be known and to satisfy certain estimates. The corresponding pseudodifferential equations occur when the integral equation method is applied e.g. to the Laplace, Helmholtz or biharmonic equation in a smooth domain in \(\mathbb{R}^2\). The authors study a full discretization of the trigonometric Galerkin method using trigonometric interpolants of \(a_p\). The order \(M\) of these interpolants may be essentially smaller than the order \(N\) of the approximate solution, e.g. \(M \sim N^\sigma\), \(0 < \sigma \leq 1\). This leads to a band system of linear equations which can be solved in \(O(N^{1 + 2\sigma})\) operations. The proposed method is of optimal convergence order in Sobolev norms.
