A necessary and sufficient condition is given for the derived subgroup of a metabelian group with one additional relation to be torsionfree. Using the Magnus embedding a group \(G = F/N'\) may be considered as a subgroup of the matrix group \(M(F/N)\). The second theorem asserts that an equation with one unknown is solvable in \(G\) if and only if it is solvable in \(M(F/N)\).
