This is a survey on some functional analytic properties of the Fourier algebra. It is mostly concerned with results connected with the areas of activity of this author. Many results have appeared in the literature under the guise of belonging to the domain of the algebras \(A_p (G)\) and have consequently remained unread. One of the aims of this survey is to convince the reader that these results are new for \(A(G)\), and in most cases even for abelian \(G\) (and in some cases even if \(G= R\) or \(T\); see Ch. 3, 5, 7 and 8). This survey also contains remarks on improvements obtained in the literature on the above results. Furthermore we discuss to some extent results obtained for the Figà-Talamanca, Gaudry, Eymard Herz algebras \(A_p (G)\), \(1< p< \infty\) where \(A_2 (G)= A(G)\) à la \textit{P. Eymard} [Bull. Soc. Math. France 92, 181-236 (1964; Zbl 0169.46403)]. We have taken pains to make the survey as readable as we could. It will be of use to mathematicians and graduate students who are interested, even peripherally, in \(A(G)\), and even in case \(G\) is abelian.
