Let \(\mathbb{U}\) be the unit disk and \(\varphi\) be a holomorphic self-map on \(\mathbb{U}\). The composition operator with symbol \(\varphi\) is defined by \(C_\varphi f = f\circ \varphi\), where \(f\) is holomorphic on \(\mathbb{U}\). The restriction of \(\varphi\) on various Banach spaces of holomorphic functions on \(\mathbb{U}\) has been an active subject of research for more than three decades, and there are some monographs on this topic. The study of composition operator adjoints was initiated over twenty years ago by \textit{C. C. Cowen}, who gave the form of adjoint of \(C_\varphi\) on the Hardy space \(H^2(\mathbb{U})\) in the case of \(\varphi\) being a linear fractional [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 11, No.~2, 151--160 (1988; Zbl 0638.47027)]. More recently, this work was generalized by \textit{E. A. Gallardo-Gutiérrez} and \textit{A. Montes-Rodríguez} [Math. Ann. 327, No.~1, 117--134 (2003; Zbl 1048.47016)] who found a nice and simple explicit formula for \(C_\varphi^*\) in the Dirichlet space \(\mathcal{D}\). When \(\varphi\) is any self-map of \(\mathbb{U}\), \textit{M. J. Martín} and \textit{D. Vukotić} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 304, No.~1, 22--32 (2005; Zbl 1071.47028)] established some formulas for \(C_\varphi^*\) via integral on the Bergman and Dirichlet spaces. In this paper, the authors present quite explicit formulas for the adjoint of composition operators on the Dirichlet and Bergman spaces in the case that \(\varphi\) is a finite Blaschke product or a rational univalent holomorphic self-map of the unit disk \(\mathbb{U}\). It is remarkable that most of these formulas are presented in terms of residue.
