The author examines the relation between the ill-posed Cauchy problem \[ u_t - \triangle \log u = 0\quad\text{in }\mathbb R^n \times (0,T),\qquad u(x,0) = u_0(x) \geq 0 \tag{1} \] and the well-posed Cauchy problem \[ u_t - \frac 1{m} \triangle u^m = 0,\quad u(x,0) = u_0(x) \geq 0. \tag{2} \] (The problem (1) can be viewed formally as the limit of (2) as \(m \to 0\).) He gives the proof of the following result: Suppose that \(0 \leq u_0 \in L^1(\mathbb R^n)\). Let \(u_m\) be the unique solution of (2) with initial data \(u_0\). If \(n \geq 3\) then for any \(t_0 > 0\) \(\lim _{m \to 0} (\sup _{t_0 < t < \infty } \int _{\mathbb R^n} u_m(x,t) dx) = 0\). If \(n = 2\), \(u_m\) goes in \(C(\langle 0, T \rangle; L^1_{\text{loc}}(\mathbb R^2))\) to \(u^1\). Here \(T = \|u_0 \|/4 \pi \), \(u^1\) is the maximal solution of (1) with initial data \(u_0\).
