Let \({\mathcal D}\) be the unit square and \(u:\partial D\to {\mathbb{R}}^2\) an \(L\) bi-Lipschitz map. The following theorem is the main result of the paper: Theorem A. If \(u\) is piecewise affine, then there exists a piecewise affine extension \(v:{\mathcal D}\to {\mathbb{R}}^2\) which is \(CL^4\) bi-Lipschitz. Moreover, there exists a smooth extension \(v\) which is \(C'L^{28/3}\) bi-Lipschitz. The authors give a constructive proof of this theorem. Then they extend the result to general maps \(u\): Theorem B. There exists an extension \(v:{\mathcal D}\to {\mathbb{R}}^2\) which is \(C^{\prime\prime}L^4\) bi-Lipschitz. The proof uses the approximation of bi-Lipschitz maps by piecewise affine ones and Theorem A. Related results were obtained by \textit{P. Tukia} [Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Ser. A I, Math. 5, 49--72 (1980; Zbl 0411.57015)], using different argument and without any estimate on the bi-Lipschitz constant of \(v\).
