The unique feature of a two-dimensional system is the existence of two independent information propagation directions. The second point is that, in many practical applications, variables describing a plant or a process must be positive. Taking account of this fact, there is a need to consider the so-called positive two-dimensional systems. Several spectral properties, such as finite memory, separability, and property L, which depend on the, in this case, two variable characteristic polynomial, are investigated under the nonnegativity constraints. Some aspects of the Perron-Frobenius theory are extended to this case and, finally, some results on two-dimensional positive realizations are presented.
