This article deals with the boundary value problem \[ {d^2y\over dt^2}-k^2Q(t)y= F(t),\quad\lim_{t\to\pm\infty} \Biggl({dy\over dt}\pm kQ^{1/2}(\pm\infty)y\Biggr)=0 \] with a big parameter \(k\) in a Banach space \(B\) under some natural assumptions including the conditions that the operators \(-Q^{1/2}(t)\) \((t\in\mathbb{R})\) exist and generate semigroups of bounded operators and that the limits \(Q^{1/2}(\pm\infty)\) also exist. In the scalar case it the following asymptotic formula for the Green function of the problem under consideration is well-known \[ G(t,s)=-(2k)^{-1}Q^{-1/4}(t)Q^{-1/4}(s)\exp \Biggl(-\text{sign}(t-s)k \int^t_sQ^{1/2}(s)ds\Biggr)\;(1+O(k^{-1})). \] The main result of the article is a direct generalization of this formula to the general case. In addition some simple applications to the theory of waveguides are presented. Some modifications of the above boundary value problem are also considered.
