There are many results which indicate that the behavior of a Rademacher series on a small set can have a large effect on its coefficients. For example, although a Rademacher series converges almost everywhere if and only if its coefficients belong to \(l^2\), the coefficients of everywhere convergent Rademacher series must belong to \(l^1\). Here, the author continues to expand on this theme. He shows that given any decreasing function \(\varphi\) on \([1,\infty]\) which satisfies certain natural growth conditions, there is a set \(E\) of measure zero such that all Rademacher series which converge on \(E\) have coefficients which satisfy \(\sum^\infty_{k=1}|c_k|\varphi(k)<\infty\). He obtains a similar result for trigonometric series which satisfy the lacunary condition \(\sum n_k/n_{k+1}<\infty\). The growth conditions he uses include functions of the form \(\varphi(x)=1/x^\alpha\log^\beta(1+x)\) for \(\alpha,\beta>0\). They also include \(\varphi(x)=x^{-\alpha}\) for \(0<\alpha<{1\over 2}\). The corresponding results for this last class of functions were announced earlier by the author [Archives of VINITI, No. 4149-82 (1982)].
