Let \(k\) be a field of characteristic zero and \(k(t)\) the rational function field over \(k\). Many authors looked at the ranks of elliptic curves in towers of function fields as \(k(t^{1/n})\) (e.g. [\textit{S. Shioda}, Am. J. Math. 108, 415--432 (1986; Zbl 0602.14033)], [\textit{D. Ulmer}, J. Inst. Math. Jussieu 12, No. 1, 1--23 (2013; Zbl 1318.14025)], [\textit{L. Berger}, Acta Arith. 156, No. 4, 301--323 (2012; Zbl 1271.14040)]). In this paper a huge generalization is done, obtaining boundedness of ranks (and often the explict values of the ranks) for many towers of higher genus curves. Here we collect one of their theorems. Fix an integer \(g\geq 2\) and let \(X\) be the smooth curve of genus \(g\) over \(\mathbb {Q}(t)\) with affine plane model \(ty^2 = x^{2g+1}-x+t-1\). Then the Jacobian of \(X\) is absolutely simple and its rank is \(2g\) over \(\overline{\mathbb {Q}}(t^{/p^r})\) for every prime \(p\) and every integer \(r>0\). Many other examples are treated, e.g. many of the higher genus curve described in \(\mathbb {P}^1\times \mathbb {P}^1\) in [\textit{L. Berger}, J. Number Theory 128, 3013--3030 (2008; Zbl 1204.11098)]. A key tool is [\textit{Yu. G. Zarhin}, Progr. Math. 235, 339--362 (2005; Zbl 1086.11026)], which gives strong upper bounds on endomorphisms of Jacobians.
