The author extends to the class of soluble-by-finite FC-nilpotent groups his previous work on \(\psi(G)\), a variation of the Frattini subgroup of a group \(G\). This is defined as follows. If \(U\) is a subgroup of \(G\), let \(m(U)\) denote the least upper bound of the ordinal types of proper ascending chains of subgroups from \(U\) to \(G\). A proper subgroup \(M\) of \(G\) is called major if \(m(M) = m(U)\) whenever \(M \leq U < G\). Then \(\psi(G)\) is defined to be the intersection of all the major subgroups of \(G\). The main result is this. Let \(G\) be a soluble-by-finite FC-nilpotent group and let \(N\triangleleft G\). If \(N\psi(G)/\psi(G)\) is hypercentral (hypercyclic), then \(N\) is hypercentral (hypercyclic).
