The associated Lie ring \({\mathcal L}(G)\) of a group \(G\) is the additively written direct sum of the quotients of the lower central series of \(G\) with Lie multiplication induced by taking group commutators. If \(F\) is a free group then \({\mathcal L}(F)\) is a free \(\mathbb{Z}\)-Lie ring. Let \(V\) be a verbal subgroup of \(F\), then \({\mathcal L}(F/V)\) is a quotient Lie ring of \({\mathcal L}(F)\) over the so-called ideal of (Lie) relators. It may be difficult to determine the ideal of relators, it is still an open problem whether this ideal is always a verbal one. The present article is devoted to multilinear relators for \({\mathcal L}(F/V)\). The author actually shows how the multilinear relators which generate the verbal ideal of \({\mathcal L}(F)\) containing all multilinear relators can be obtained from the elements which generate \(V\) as a verbal subgroup. The symmetry properties of multilinear relators are established. For intersections, products and commutators of varieties, it is proved that the multilinear relators are expressed in those of the participating varieties by ``good'' formulae. Certain generalizations are discussed, both of the techniques used and of the results, including changing the associated Lie ring to another, defined with respect to the lower \(p\)- central series. The general results of the present paper include, as a special case, the description of the multilinear relators of the Lie ring of a free group of prime exponent, due to M. R. Vaughan-Lee. Note, however, that even for this concrete variety much remains unknown: whether all relators are consequences of multilinear ones, or whether there is a finite basis for multilinear relators.
