The authors study the linear independence of (finite subsets of) the functions in a cone-adapted discrete shearlet system, i.e.\ the union of the sets \(\{\phi(\bullet - c_1m)\,:\, m\in \mathbb Z^2\}\), \(\{2^{3j/4}\psi(S_kA_{2^j}\bullet -cm)\,:\, j\geq 0, |k| \leq 2^{\lfloor j/2\rfloor}, m\in \mathbb Z^2\}\) and \(\{2^{3j/4}\tilde\psi(S_k^T\tilde A_{2^j}\bullet -\tilde cm)\,:\, j\geq 0, |k| \leq 2^{\lfloor j/2\rfloor}-1, m\in \mathbb Z^2\}\) where \(\phi(x_1x_2)=\phi^1(x_1)\phi^1(x_2)\), \(\psi(x_1,x_2)=\phi^1(x_1)\psi^1(x_2)\), \(\tilde \psi(x_1,x_2)= \psi(x_2,x_1)\), \(A_{2^j}=\begin{pmatrix} 2^j & 0 \\ 0 & 2^{\lfloor j/2\rfloor}\end{pmatrix}\), \(\tilde A_{2^j}= PA_{2^j}P\) and \(\tilde c = Pc\) with \(P=\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}\) and \(c=\begin{pmatrix} c_1\\ c_2\end{pmatrix}\) where \(\phi^1\) and \(\psi^1\) are a scaling and wavelet function in a multiresolution analysis on the line. It is shown that such a shearlet system is linearly independent provided \(\phi^1\) and \(\psi^1\) have compact support and the system \(\{\phi^1(\cdot -c_im), \psi^1(2^j\cdot -c_im)\,:\, j\geq 0, m\in \mathbb Z\}\) is linearly independent. The proof relies in an essential way on the shapes of the supports of the shearlet functions. In addition a number of other questions are discussed such as the property of being a frame and the fact that it is essential in the definition of linear independence that finite subsets are considered.
