The smallest Mealy automaton of intermediate growth. (Q2368724)

Let \(I_2\) be the two-state Mealy automaton over the two-symbol alphabet. In this paper, the authors study \(I_2\) which is the smallest Mealy automaton of intermediate growth. The authors describe the semigroup of automatic transformations \(S_{I_2}\) associated to \(I_2\) as well as its quotient semigroups, exhibit the growth series of the automaton and the semigroup, and derive sharp asymptotics for the growth functions.
