Let \(\{w_{2n}\}_{n\in\mathbb N}\) be a sequence of polynomials with zeros \(\{x_{n,i}\}_{i=1}^{2n}\) with real coefficients of degrees \(\deg w_{2n}\leq 2n,\) let \(\{\mu_n\}_{n\in\mathbb N}\) be a sequence of finite positive Borel measures whose supports supp\((\mu_n)\) contain infinitely many points, are all contained in a compact set \(S\subset{\mathbb R}\) and such that \[ \int_S\frac{d\mu_n}{w_{2n}}<\infty. \] By \(\Psi_{[a,b]}\) is denoted the conformal mapping of \(\bar{\mathbb C}\backslash[a,b]\) onto \(\{| z| >1\}\) such that \(\Psi_{[a,b]}(\infty)=\infty\) and \(\Psi_{[a,b]}^{\prime}(\infty)>0.\) Let \(k\in{\mathbb Z}\) be a fixed integer. The authors call \((\{d\mu_n\},\{w_{2n}\},k)\) strongly admissible on \(S\) if (i) There exists a finite Borel measure \(\mu\) on \(\mathbb R\), such that \(\mu_n{{*\atop\longrightarrow}\atop{}}\mu,n\to\infty.\) (ii) In case that \(k\) is negative, then \(\int_S\prod_{i=1}^{-k}\left| 1-x/x_{n,i}\right| ^{-1}d\mu_n(x)\leq M_k<\infty,\) \(n\in\mathbb N.\) (iii) \(\lim_{n\to\infty}\sum_{i=1}^{2n}(1-| \Psi_{[a,b]}(x_{n,i})| ^{-1})=\infty, \) where \([a,b]\) is the convex hull of \(S.\) (iv) \(\lim_{n\to\infty}\int_S| \mu_n^{\prime}(x)-\mu^{\prime}(x)| dx=0.\) Furthermore, the sequence \(\{\mu_n\}\) is called a Denisov-type sequence on \(S\) if (a) There exists a finite positive Borel measure \(\mu,\) such that supp\((\mu)=S\) and \(\mu_n {{*\atop\longrightarrow}\atop{}}\mu,n\to\infty.\) (b) \([-1,1]\subset S\) and for each \(\varepsilon>0, S\backslash(-1-\varepsilon,1+\varepsilon)\) is a finite set. (c) \(\mu^{\prime}(x)>0\) a.e. on \([-1,1]\) and for all sufficiently large \(n,\mu_n^{\prime}(x)>0\) a.e. on \([-1,1].\) The main results are ratio and relative asymptotics of sequences of orthogonal polynomials with respect to \(\frac{d\mu_n}{w_{2n}}\) if for each \(k\in\mathbb Z\) \((\{d\mu_n\},\{w_{2n}\},k)\) is strongly admissible on \(S\) and \(\{\mu_n\}\) is a Denisov-type sequence on \(S.\) These results are applied to obtain ratio asymptotics for orthogonal polynomials with respect to fixed measures on the unit circle and for multiple orthogonal polynomials of a Nikishin system.
