A subgroup \(A\) of a finite group \(G\) \textit{covers} the maximal pair \((K,H)\), where \(K\) and \(H\) are subgroups of \(G\) such that \(K\) is a maximal subgroup of \(H\), if \(AH=AK\) and \textit{avoids} \((K,H)\) if \(A\cap K=A\cap H\). Every permutable subgroup covers or avoids every maximal pair, but the converse is not true in general. The principal aim of the paper under review is to study finite groups in which some subgroups cover or avoid some relevant systems of maximal pairs. Some interesting characterizations of \(p\)-solubility and solubility by means of subgroup embedding properties related to the above one are obtained, and some earlier results on CAP-subgroups and partial CAP-subgroups are extended.
