Let \((M,g)\) be a complete Riemannian manifold with associated Laplacian \(\Delta_g\); this operator is essentially self-adjoint in \(L^2(M)\). Scattering theory is studied in a geometric context. What is examined is the behaviour of the continuous spectrum of the Laplacian under a perturbation \(h\) of the initial metric -- one assumes that the covariant derivatives up to some order of \(h\) decay at a fixed rate in the geodesic distance from the base point. No conditions are imposed on the injectivity radius. Of particular interest is the existence and the completeness of the associated wave operators \(W_\pm(\Delta_h,\Delta_g;J)\). Here is a brief outline to the article. After a careful introduction, equivalence of Riemannian metrics is discussed in Section 1, the injectivity radius and bounded curvature is discussed in Section 2, weighted Sobolev spaces are introduced in Section 3, functions of the Laplacian are treated in Section 4, equivalent metrics and Sobolev spaces are treated in Section 5, trace class estimates are presented in Section 6, existence and completeness of wave operators are studied in Section 7, and \(\beta\)-equivalence and analytic continuations of the resolvent are studied in Section 8.
