The authors provide a complete characterization of the strict singularity, respectively the disjoint strict singularity, of the inclusion maps \(E \hookrightarrow L^1 + L^\infty\) on the interval \([0,\infty)\), where \(E\) is a rearrangement invariant (r.i.) space. Recall that the linear map \(U: E \to F\), where \(E\) is a Banach lattice and \(F\) an arbitrary Banach space, is disjointly strictly singular if there is no non-trivial disjointly supported sequence \((x_n) \subset E\) so that the restriction of \(U\) to the closed linear span spanned by \(\{x_n: n \in {\mathbb N}\}\) is an isomorphism. Let \(E\) be an r.i. space on \([0,\infty)\). This paper is dedicated to the quite intricate proofs of the following main results. Theorem A. The following conditions are equivalent. {\parindent=8mm \begin{itemize}\item[(i)] The inclusion \(E \hookrightarrow L^1 + L^\infty\) is disjointly strictly singular. \item[(ii)] \(E\) does not contain any of the spaces \(L_0^{p,\infty}\) for \(1 < p < \infty\), \(L^1\) or the closure \(\overline{L^1 \cap L^\infty}\) in \(L^\infty\). \item[(iii)] \(\lim\limits _{t\to 0} {{\varphi_E(t)}\over t} = \lim\limits_{t\to\infty} \varphi_E(t) = \infty\), where \(\varphi_E(t) = \| \chi_{[0,t]}\|_E\) for \(t \geq 0\), and \(\sup\limits_n \| t^{-1/p} \chi_{({1 \over n},n)}\|_E = \infty\) for \(1 < p < \infty\). \end{itemize}} Theorem B. The inclusion \(E \hookrightarrow L^1 + L^\infty\) is strictly singular if and only if the above condition (iii) holds, and the restricted r.i. space \(E[0,1]\) does not contain the order continuous Orlicz space \(L_0^{\varphi}[0,1]\), where \(\varphi(x)\!= \exp(x^2)-1\) for \(x \geq 0\). The above results extend several earlier ones, where \(E\) belonged to important subclasses, such as the Orlicz, Lorentz or Marcinkiewicz spaces. The implication (i) \(\Rightarrow\) (iii) from Theorem A was earlier obtained by the authors [Stud. Math. 144, 209--236 (2001; Zbl 0979.46015)], which also contains the related characterization of the (disjoint) strict singularity of the inclusion \(L^1 \cap L^\infty \hookrightarrow E\) on \([0,\infty)\).
