Despite the vast span of the subject, the book leaves the impression of high level of completeness. It gives the new insight into subdivision as a process for generating smooth surfaces, by considering subdivision surfaces as spline surfaces with singularities. The new notion of spline is used in more general sense than usually. In fact, the spline is defined as a function defined on a domain consisting of indexed copies of a standard domain. Then, the authors consider spline in subdivision form as the union of a nested sequence of rings and the central point. This naturally leads to the definition of the subdivision algorithm as a recursion that generates this sequence of rings. By this approach, the authors overcome shortcomings of two main ``streams'' of classic subdivision theories, one regarding subdivision as geometric ``corner cutting'' process, and second that applies some subdivision operator on the graphs of data configurations. Contents: Introduction and overview; Geometry near singularities; Generalized splines; Subdivision surfaces; \(C^k_1\)-subdivision algorithms; Case studies of \(C^k_1\)-subdivision algorithms; Shape analysis and \(C^k_2\)-algorithms; Approximation and linear independence; Conclusion; References; Index.
