\(\mathcal{M}\) being a von Neumann algebra equipped with a trace \(\tau\), \(LS(\mathcal{M})\) the \(\ast\)-algebra of all locally measurable operators and \(S(\mathcal{M},\tau)\) the one of all \(\tau\)-measurable operators affiliated with \(\mathcal{M}\), the authors consider the local measure topology \(t(\mathcal{M})\) on \(LS(\mathcal{M})\) and on \(S(\mathcal{M},\tau)\). They also consider the \(\tau\)-local measure topology \(t_{\tau l}\) and the weak \(\tau\)-local measure topology \(t_{w \tau l}\) if the trace \(\tau\) on \(\mathcal{M}\) is semi-finite but not finite. In this paper, the authors study relations between the topology \(t(\mathcal{M})\) and the topologies \(t_{\tau l}\), \(t_{w \tau l}\) and \(t_{o}(\mathcal{M})\), where \(t_{o}(\mathcal{M})\) is the \((o)\)-topology on \(LS_{h}(\mathcal{M})= \{ T \in LS(M) : T^{\ast} = T \} \). They give a necessary and sufficient condition for each of the topologies \(t_{\tau l}\), \(t_{w\tau l}\) to coincide with the topology \(t(\mathcal{M})\), and they prove that \(t(\mathcal{M})\) coincides with \(t_{o}(\mathcal{M})\) on \(LS_{h}(\mathcal{M},\tau)\) if and only if \(\mathcal{M}\) is \(\sigma\)-finite and finite. Furthermore, these two topologies coincide on \(S_{h}(\mathcal{M},\tau)\) with \(t_{o}(\mathcal{M})\) only for finite traces. Among the other results, they deal with necessary and sufficient conditions for \(t(\mathcal{M})\) to be locally convex or normable, and also for coincidence between convergence in the topology \(t(\mathcal{M})\) and \(o\)-convergence of sequences in \(LS_{h}(\mathcal{M})\).
