The Chaboche model for nonlinear kinematic hardening was introduced with the intention to describe rate independent relaxation effects (the so-called ratchetting) in elastoplastic solids. Its main computational difficulty is related to the lack of monotonicity in general, which makes it problematic to apply the techniques developed for generalized standard materials. As a first step towards a better understanding of the model, the authors focus on mathematical properties of the scalar Chaboche stress-strain constitutive operator corresponding to uniaxial loading and unloading experiments. The main results consist in deriving sufficient conditions for its asymptotic input-output stability in terms of the input oscillation amplitude. Particular attention is paid to the time periodic case.
