    Let \(R\) be a ring with center \(Z\) and \(f\) a mapping from \(R\) into \(R\). For \(x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n,y\in R\) define \(\langle y,x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n\rangle\) inductively as follows: \(\langle y,x_1\rangle=yx_1+x_1y\) and \(\langle y,x_1,\dots,x_{k+1}\rangle=\langle\langle y,x_1,\dots,x_k\rangle,x_{k+1}\rangle\). If \(x_1=x_2=\cdots=x_n=x\), then write \(\langle y,x_1,\dots,x_n\rangle\) as \(\langle y,x\rangle_n\). The principal theorem asserts that for \(n>1\) and \(R\) an \((n+1)!\)-torsion-free ring with left identity \(e\), if \(G\colon R\times R\to R\) is a symmetric bi-additive map with trace \(g\) such that \(\langle g(x),x\rangle_n=Z\) for all \(x\in R\), then \(g(x)x=xg(x)\) for all \(x\in R\). There are several other theorems of similar character.
