Let \(F\) be a norming subspace of the dual \(X^*\) of a Banach space \(X\). The following set derivation is considered on convex bounded subsets \(C\) of \(X\): \(\epsilon>0\) being given, one removes all slices of \(C\) whose measure of noncompactness is less than \(\epsilon\). The main result of this article states that if for every \(\epsilon>0\), the empty set is reached in a countable number of iterations, then the space \(X\) admits an equivalent locally uniformly rotund norm whose unit ball is closed for the weak topology defined by \(F\). This result extends a similar theorem due to G.\,Lancien where \(F=X^*\) and slices with small diameters were considered.
