This paper investigates ways in which a non-nilpotent finite group has a subgroup or section whose commutator group, and in some cases the possibly smaller nilpotent residual, is large relative to the size of that subgroup or section. Thus, the word group in this review will mean finite group. Denote the nilpotent residual of a group \(G\) by \(U(G)\) and the Frattini quotient \(G/\Phi(G)\) by \(G^*\). The authors prove the following main results: Theorem A. Let \(G\) be a non-nilpotent group. Then there exists a subnormal subgroup \(K\leq G\) such that \(|U(K^*)|>|K^*|^{1/2}\). Theorem B. Let \(G\) be a non-nilpotent group. Then there exist characteristic subgroups \(M,K\) of \(G\) such that \(M<K\), \(M\) nilpotent, satisfying \(|U(K/M)|>|K/M|^{1/2}\) and \(Z(K/M)=1\). In order to give examples to indicate ways in which these results are best possible, the authors relate this work to their earlier work with \textit{M. Herzog} [J. Algebra 278, No. 2, 494-501 (2004: Zbl 1060.20018)].
