The author studies some elementary properties of nondegenerate \(\alpha\)-times integrated \(C\)-cosine functions on a Banach space \(X\) and he characterizes their generator \(A\) in terms of the unique existence of strong solutions of the abstract Cauchy problem \[ \left\{\begin{align*}{ u^{\prime \prime} (t) = A u(t) + f(t), & \quad t >0, \cr u(0) = x,\quad u^{\prime}(0) =y. & \cr }\end{align*} \right. \]
