The authors study conditions for \(\bigoplus_\alpha N_\alpha\) to be \(M\)-injective for a given module \(M\). As a nice consequence they show that for a ring \(R\) the following conditions are equivalent: (1) \(R\) has ACC on essential right ideals, (2) Direct sums of injective singular right \(R\)-modules are injective, (3) \(R/\text{Soc}(R_R)\) is right Noetherian. -- The equivalence \((1)\Leftrightarrow(3)\) was obtained in an earlier paper of \textit{N. V. Dung, R. Wisbauer} and the reviewer [Arch. Math. 53, No. 3, 252--255 (1989; Zbl 0658.16018)].
