The goal of the authors is to investigate solvability and asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the semilinear Cauchy problem for the strongly damped wave equation \[ u_{tt}-\alpha\Delta u_t-\Delta u+\beta u_t=f(u)+g(x),\quad t>0,\;x\in\mathbb R^N\tag{1} \] \[ u(x,0)=u_0(x),\;u_t(0,x)=w_0(x),\quad x\in\mathbb R^N,\tag{2} \] where the nonlinear term grows like \(| u|^q\) with \(q<\frac{N+2}{N-2}\) if \(N\geq 3\). The authors show that (1)--(2) generates a dissipative semigroup \(S(t)\) on the corresponding phase space, which is a product of the locally uniform spaces. Existence of an absorbing set is established, which leads to the existence of a global attractor in a suitably defined metric space.
