The author examines the possibility of finding for a given pair of states on \(C^*\)-algebras \(A_ 1\otimes A_ 2\) and \(A_ 2\otimes A_ 3\), resp., a joint extension to \(A_ 1\otimes A_ 2\otimes A_ 3\). If \(A_ 2\) is abelian, such an extension exists for any pair of states with a common restriction to \(A_ 2\). On the other hand, a state having a common extension with a pure state is necessarily a product state. Some characterizations of states having a `universal extension property' are discussed. A sufficient condition for the existence of an extension is given in terms of Bell's inequalities. A simple particular case is investigated, in which a necessary and sufficient criterion for the existence of an extension comes close to the sufficient condition mentioned above.
