This paper deals with characterizing compact sets in vector-valued Banach function spaces. It extends a result of \textit{S.\,Diaz} and \textit{F.\,Mayoral} [Acta Math.\ Hung.\ 83, No.\,3, 231--239 (1999; Zbl 0926.46031)] proved for the spaces of Banach space-valued Bochner integrable functions, \(L^p_X\), for \(1 \leq p < \infty\). Let \(E\) be a Banach function space with order continuous norm over a probability space \((\Omega, P)\). Consider the Banach function space \(E_X\). The main result of this paper is that \(F \subset E_X\) is relatively compact if and only if it is uniformly tight (in the sense of Prohorov), almost order bounded and scalarly relatively compact.
