Let \(\mathcal{S}\) be a ribbon category, \(H\) a self dual Hopf algebra in \(\mathcal{S}\), \(\mathcal{C}_0=\text{Rep}_{\mathcal{S}}(H)\) the category of representations of \(H\) in \(\mathcal{S}\) and \(\mathcal{C}=\mathcal{C}_0 + \mathcal{C}_1\) with \(\mathcal{C}_1=\mathcal{S}\) (i.e., \(\mathcal{C}\) is the union of \(\mathcal{C}_0\) and \(\mathcal{C}_1\), with objects and morphisms that belong either to \(\mathcal{C}_0\) or else to \(\mathcal{C}_1\)). The aim of the paper is to extend the monoidal structure on \(\mathcal{C}_0\) to all of \(\mathcal{C}\), and then to show that \(\mathcal{C}\) is rigid monoidal. Furthermore, in the case when \(\mathcal{S}\) is, moreover, symmetric, the category \(\mathcal{C}\) is braided monoidal and, under an extra condition, even ribbon via a twist isomorphism determined by a pivotal structure on \(\mathcal{C}\). The above construction is specialized for four situations: Tambara-Yamagami categories, symplectic fermions, Sweedler's \(4\)-dimensional Hopf algebra and a \(16\)-dimensional (non)-(co)commutative triangular Hopf algebra, respectively.
