In the paper under the review, the authors provide a proof of the Fourier-Jacobi case of the Gross-Prasad conjecture, which appears in the skew-Hermitian case of that conjecture. The first main tool in their proof is the local theta correspondence for the unitary groups, which enables one to relate the Fourier-Jacobi case to the Bessel one, which appears in the Hermitian case and is established by the work of Waldspurger and Beuzart-Plessis. In order to be able to apply the know results for the Bessel case, the authors prove two Prasad's conjectures, which reveal the structure of the local theta correspondence for the unitary groups of almost equal rank (i.e., of the unitary groups of the spaces whose dimensions differ most by one). The other main role in the paper is played by the Arthur's multiplicity formula, and the paper presents one of the first concrete applications of such reciprocity law.
