In the article under review, the author proves the following results: Theorem A. Let \(G\) be a locally graded group and let \(k\) be a positive integer such that the set consisting of all \(\gamma _k(H)\), where \(H\) is a non-normal subgroup of \(G\), is finite. Then \(\gamma _k(G)\) is finite. Recall that a group \(G\) is said to be locally graded if every finitely generated non-trivial subgroup of \(G\) contains a proper subgroup of finite index. Moreover, \(\gamma _k(G)\) denotes the \(k\)-th term of the lower central series of \(G\). Theorem B. Let \(G\) be a locally graded group and let \(k\) be a positive integer such that the set consisting of all \(\gamma _k(H)\), where \(H\) is an infinite non-normal subgroup of \(G\), is finite. Then, \(G\) either is an irreducible Chernikov group or \(\gamma _k(G)\) is finite. Here, a Chernikov group is said to be irreducible if the finite residual \(J\) of \(G\) is not central and J does not contain infinite proper \(K\)-invariant subgroups for each subgroup \(K\) of \(G\) such that \(C_G(J)<K\). Note that the above results generalize the corresponding ones obtained by the author and \textit{F. de Giovanni} [ibid. 86, No. 4, 310--316 (2006; Zbl 1100.20030)] replacing \(\gamma _k(H)\) by the commutator subgroup \(H^\prime\).
