Given two minimal real-analytic CR submanifolds \(M \subset {\mathbb C}^N\) and \(M' \subset {\mathbb C}^{N'}\), a question of much recent interest has been to understand exactly when are CR maps from \(M\) to \(M'\) necessarily real-analytic. One tool for constructing non-analytic CR maps with a prescribed rank is the so-called nontrivial holomorphic deformation of real-analytic CR maps. In this current paper, the author proves a converse to this construction: Given a sufficiently smooth CR mapping of a given rank that is not real-analytic, then, on an open dense set, there exists a nontrivial holomorphic deformation of real-analytic CR maps of at least the given rank. Using this result, the author proves several corollaries. In particular that the existence of the aforementioned deformation is essentially a necessary and sufficient condition for real-analyticity of CR mappings of a given rank. Several other interesting corollaries follow as well.
