Let \(f\) be a meromorphic function on the complex upper half plane \(\mathcal H\) which has period \(1\) and meromorphic at infinity. Then \(f\) has an infinite \(q\)-product expansion of the form \(f(z)=cq^h\prod_{n\geq 1}(1-q^n)^{c(n)}\) with \(q=e^{2\pi iz}\). Let \(S_f\) be the set of the exponents \(c(n)\). Let \(\Gamma_0(N)\) be the Hecke congruence subgroup with \(N\) squarefree. If \(f\) is a meromorphic modular form of integral weight on \(\Gamma_0(N)\) and the divisor of \(f\) is supported at the cusps, then it is known that \(S_f\) is a finite set, by the result of \textit{W. Kohnen} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 133, No. 1, 65--70 (2004; Zbl 1105.11009)]. In this article, the authors show the finiteness of the set \(S_f\) does not hold for generalized modular forms \(f\). They construct a generalized modular form \(f\) on \(\Gamma_0(N)\) such that \(f\) has no zeros on \(\mathcal H\), the logarithmic derivative of \(f\) is a normalized cuspidal Hecke eigenform of weight 2 on \(\Gamma_0(N)\) and \(S_f\) is an infinite set.
