If \(X\) is a smooth complex algebraic surface, consider a generic projection \(X \to \mathbb{P}^2\) and let \(S\) be the corresponding branch locus curve in \(\mathbb{P}^2\). \textit{V. S. Kulikov} and \textit{M. Teicher} [Izv. Math. 64, No. 2, 311--341 (2000; Zbl 1004.14005)] have shown that if the Braid Monodromy Factorizations (BMF) of the branch loci \(S_1\) and \(S_2\) of two surfaces \(X_1\) and \(X_2\) are Hurwitz-equivalent, then the surfaces \(X_1\) and \(X_2\) are diffeomorphic. Moreover, if the two factorizations are not Hurwitz-equivalent, then the surfaces are not projectively deformation equivalent. The authors exhibit two surfaces \(X_1\) and \(X_2\), coming from different embeddings of a \(K3\) surface, such that the fundamental groups \(\pi_1(P^2 \setminus S_1)\) and \(\pi_1(P^2 \setminus S_2)\) are not isomorphic, but the fundamental groups of the corresponding Galois covers of \(X_1\) and \(X_2\) are isomorphic.
