The main theorem characterizes Lambda-sequences for which the space of continuous functions of bounded Lambda-variation is separable in the Lambda-variation norm; it also permits to answer a question raised by \textit{D. Waterman} [Real Anal. Exch. 3 (1977--78), 61--85 (1978; Zbl 0402.42004)].
