The author shows that, under compression, the associated minimization problem for the classical equations of a nonlinearly elastic membrane admits no solution. The proof is based on a result of nonexistence of minimizers of nonconvex functionals [\textit{B. Dacorogna} and \textit{P. Marcellini}, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 131, No. 4, 359--399 (1995; Zbl 0837.49002)].
