Let \(\pi\) be a set of primes and \(G\) a finite group. Let \(H\leq G\) and \(N\) the core of \(H\) in \(G\). Assume that \(H/N\) is a Hall \(\pi\)-subgroup of \(G/N\) and that \(G/N\) is \(\pi\)-separable. Under these hypotheses, the two main results of the paper study two somewhat dual conditions. To state the first one, let \(\chi\in\text{Irr}(G)\), and suppose that \(\chi=\alpha^G\) for every irreducible constituent \(\alpha\) of \(\chi_H\). Then \(\chi=\beta^G\) for every irreducible constituent \(\beta\) of \(\chi_N\). To state the second one, let \(\alpha\in\text{Irr}(H)\), and suppose that \(\alpha=\chi_H\) for every irreducible constituent \(\chi\) of \(\alpha^G\). Then \(\alpha=\beta^H\) for some character \(\beta\) of \(N\), and the Hall \(\pi'\)-subgroups of \(G/N\) are Abelian. Some related questions are also studied.
