For a convex body \(K\) in \({\mathbb R}^n\), affine and dual affine quermassintegrals were introduced in several papers by E. Lutwak in the 1980ies as integral means over the Grassmannian of volume powers of projections (resp. sections) of \(K\). Lutwak conjectured a series of inequalities between these affinely invariant functionals, most of which are still open. Here, the authors consider upper and lower bounds of re-normalized versions \(\Phi_{[k]}(K), k=1,\dots, n-1,\) of the affine quermassintegrals (resp. \(\tilde\Phi_{[k]}(K), k=1,\dots, n-1,\) of the dual affine quermassintegrals) which describe the asymptotic behaviour of these functionals, as the dimension \(n\) increases. More precisely, they ask whether there exist absolute constants \(c_1, c_2>0\), such that \[ c_1\sqrt{n/k}\leq \Phi_{[k]}(K)\leq c_2\sqrt{n/k} \tag{1} \] for all convex bodies \(K\) of volume \(1\), resp. \[ c_1\leq \tilde\Phi_{[k]}(K)\leq c_2 \tag{2} \] for all centered convex bodies \(K\) of volume \(1\). In their main result, they show that the upper inequality holds in ({1}) with bound \(c_2\sqrt{n/k}\log n\) and the lower inequality in ({2}) holds with bound \(c_1/L_K\), where \(L_K\) is the isotropic constant of \(K\). They also show the upper bound \(c_3(n/k)^{3/2}\sqrt{\log (en/k)}\) in ({1}) and the lower bound \(c_4(\sqrt{n/k}\sqrt{\log (en/k)})^{-1}\) in ({2}) which are both sharp when \(k\) is proportional to \(n\). The results follow from a study of more general functionals which arise as normalized \(p\)-means of projection and section functions of \(K\) (where \(p\not= 0\) and the normalized affine and dual affine quermassintegrals correspond to the case \(p=-n\), resp. \(p=n\)).
